The Spohn manual rack kit will work with your factory k-member, Spohn tubular k-member with manual rack mount or other aftermarket tubular k-members with stock style or pinto rack mounts installed. Replace the factory's very heavy power steering rack and pump and shed some serious weight off the front of your car. Spohn's manual pinto style rack has a more aggressive gearbox and will take less effort to turn compared to a factory rack with the power assist disconnected.
Spohn's pinto rack features over-sized rod ends for the input shaft and a chromed center tube for a trick appearance. Unlike many other manual rack kits on the market, Spohn's tie rod end to spindle adapters do not require you to drill out your spindle hole. Spohn's tie rod end to spindle adapters are CNC machined from 4140 chrome moly and are machined to be a direct bolt on to the GM spindle taper. In addition, they are also on the car bump-steer adjustable. The tie rod to spindle adapters are fully threaded with double locking jam nuts for easy up-down adjustment that eliminates the need for spacers. Spohn's tie rod end set-up features 5/8 chrome moly Teflon lined rod ends with 5/8 chrome moly safety washers top and bottom for adequate articulation and safety. Spohn uses TIG welded tie rod adjusters with 4130 chrome moly threaded tube ends for the ultimate in strength and durability.
Spohn's manual rack kit includes the complete steering shaft assembly. Spohn's steering shaft features Flaming River chrome moly low profile needle bearing u-joints that have a reduced diameter for more clearance and reduced weight and they do not require lubrication. Combined with a ¾ D-D steering shaft, Spohn's steering shaft assembly provides for a substantial weight decrease over the stock steering shaft and much more header/turbo clearance. Finally, Spohn's steering shaft assembly is TIG welded so you have no worries about set screw connections coming loose.
Spohn's manual rack kit is available in four different versions, and for two different platforms. In the option boxes you will need to specify if it will be installed on a 1993-1997 or a 1998-2002 GM F-Body so you get the proper steering shaft assembly. The rack kit is available for installation on to four different k-member set-ups.
1. Factory K-member (notching and welding required)
2. Spohn Performance tubular k-member with Part #704-MRM manual rack mount installed.
3. Any other aftermarket k-member with pinto rack mounts installed. This kit will come with a polyurethane rack mount bushing and mounting hardware (not the welded tubes for mounting to stock-style rack mounts).
4. Any other aftermarket k-member with stock rack mounts installed. (welding required)
NOTE: For installation on the factory k-member you will need to slightly extend the rack clearance notch in the factory k-member and weld on the supplied rack mounting plate and gusset. For installation on an aftermarket tubular k-member (other than a Spohn) with stock style rack mounts you will need to weld on the supplied rack mounting plate and gusset (see installed pics on Spohn k-member, you will need to install that mount on to your tubular k-member).
